Firearm deer hours extended

August 20, 2007 at 03:40 PM

Firearm deer hunters in Illinois will have an extra half-hour of hunting this fall thanks to a bill sponsored by Peoria Rep. David Leitch. House Bill 320 passed easily through the Legislature this spring and was signed into law today by Gov. Blagojevich. The change is effective immediately.

“We have a huge problem with the deer population and this is one of the most effective times to take deer,” Leitch said. “This just seemed to make a lot of common sense to me and to my friends who are deer hunters. It seems long overdue.”

Leitch said 32 other states already allow firearm hunters the extra half hour (20 minutes in Wisconsin). And Leitch said the amount of sunlight is the same one-half hour after sunset as in the one-half hour before sunrise—a time period that is already legal for hunters.

Furthermore, Leitch noted that bowhunters are allowed to hunt until one-half hour after sunset.

Interestingly enough, retired conservation police officer Jeff Baile of Peoria is in favor of the extra half hour and could probably be listed as a co-sponsor to Leitch’s bill if Baile held office.

Blagojevich also signed House Bill 201, banning remote control hunting.

That is some great news for deer hunting.  How many times are you getting out of your stand at sunset and that deer is walking right to you.

I am curious on the House Bill 201.  What are the details on that?
