Dam, section of Vermilion River to reopen

Dam, section of Vermilion River to reopen
LOWELL, Ill. (AP) — The Vermilion River in northern Illinois is reopening after being closed for two years because of an unsafe dam.

The News-Tribune in LaSalle reports (http://bit.ly/HtKJ0z0) the river near Oglesby will reopen Saturday with a ceremony at a whitewater rafting launch in Lowell. State officials are expected to attend, including the director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The dam and section of river closed are owned by a private company. They were closed in July 2009 after one person died and others were injured in a rafting accident at the dam. The newspaper reports the dam’s circulating undercurrent was blamed for pulling boats and forcing them under. In response, crews worked to eliminate the hydraulic undertow.
