Three more counties now have deer herds with chronic wasting disease. Deer in Jo Daviess, Grundy and Kane counties recently tested positive for the fatal disease.
A total of 32 new cases have been detected in northern Illinois this fiscal year, which began July 1. The state has had 326 cases since 2003.
The new cases are from Winnebago County (nine), Boone (five), Ogle (two), DeKalb (five), LaSalle (two), McHenry (three), Grundy (two), Jo Daviess (one), Kane (two) and Stephenson (one).
Paul Shelton of the DNR said the cases in the new areas were disappointing but not shocking.
“It’s not terribly surprising, considering how mobile deer can be,” he said.
