Central Illinois fishing report for Sept. 14

September 14, 2012 at 08:07 AM

Peoria Journal Star

What’s biting

Weather changes caused a slowdown in fishing in most area locations this week. “There are a few isolated spots doing well, but everything else is slow,” one shop expert said. “I think it’s weather and the water is in transition to cooler temps. But not a lot of activity.”

Around the area

Banner Marsh is producing a few bass on top water using frogs.

Everything else has been slow.

Clinton Lake is seeing lots of catfish out of boats, while fair action from bank-fishing near DeWitt Bridge on shad, night crawlers and dip baits.

Crappie are small but plentiful. Some white bass are fair, hitting blade baits. Largemouth bass are slow.

Dawson Lake has lots of crappie in 9-11 inch range, good action on wax worms and minnows.

Catfish are strong, using livers, night crawlers and stink baits.

Bass and walleye are slow.

Snakeden Hollow has great walleye action on the big lake, where anglers are pulling out limits on 18-24 inchers using leeches and worms.

Crappies are producing strong action, too. NOTE: Snakeden Hollow’s last day to fish is Oct. 14. The site closes at that point for goose season.

At Spring Lake, bluegills are slow on wax worms.

Catfish are fair on dip baits, crawlers and shad.

Crappie are slow.

Wallhangers

At Snakeden Hollow, Derek Stimeling caught a 1.25-pound red ear this week.

Tip of the week

From the DNR: There is nothing in the Illinois Fish Code which prohibits the use of legally taken bluegill or sunfish as bait for another species of fish.

The bluegill/sunfish must have been taken by a properly licensed fisherman using legal sportfishing devices.

You must also observe all size and creel limits both where the bluegill/sunfish were taken and where they are being used as bait.

Also, it is illegal to cut up or dress or be in possession of cut up or dressed fish on any body of water where there is a size limit for that particular species of fish.
