Central Illinois fishing report for Aug. 16

August 16, 2013 at 12:59 PM

Peoria Journal Star

What’s biting

Bluegills are on a good bite in many areas. Lack of recent rains, though, have caused low water conditions in some lakes and ponds.

Honey holes

The cool nights have fish working shallow areas in local farm ponds and strip mines. Bluegill were biting on waxworms or crickets along the weed edges and weed pockets. Some bass were also being picked up on plastics, spinners and topwaters.

According to larrysfishinghole.com, bass and bluegill have been on a fair bite at Banner Marsh. Some bass were taking plastics and spinners along weed edges and timber, with some on topwaters or scum frogs.
At Dawson Lake, bluegill were biting on waxworms and redworms near docks and the edge of shore weeds.

Bluegills are good at most lakes at Snakeden Hollow, including McMasters Lake, on wax worms, crickets or red worms along weeds or in pockets.

On the Illinois River near Starved Rock and toward Hennepin, river levels were down, with some low water areas due to a lack of current. But catfish were still being caught on cut shad or dipbaits around deeper areas.

At Clinton Lake, catfish were biting in hot water on shad, shrimp, livers and cheese baits. Bluegill were also good all over the lake, especially when fishing shallow near structure on redworms, night crawlers and wax worms.

Tip of the week

From ifishillinois.org: Largemouth bass prefer shallow, weedy lakes and river backwaters. Largemouth are drawn to structures and will frequently be found under lily pads or lying in the shade of overhanging trees, piers or brush during the daytime. They will often move into shallow water in the evening and stay until after dawn for feeding.
