Central Illinois fishing report for Aug. 10

August 10, 2012 at 06:41 AM

Peoria Journal Star

What’s biting

Catfish are hitting strong at most places throughout the area.

Around the area

On the Illinois River, a report from Big Jim’s Bait & Tackle in Ottawa says catfish are biting great, especially after dark.

Use shad, stinkbait and night crawlers.

Largemouth bass have been spotty, while white bass remain slow.

Anglers are having trouble keeping the pesky Asian carp out of their boats.

Near Henry, catfish also are the hot species.

Catfish hauls continue to be excellent at Snakeden Hollow.

Good bass reports on top water at both Banner Marsh and Spring Lake, with anglers having success using frogs.

At Banner, bluegill rate fair and catfish fair to good.

Bluegill are fair at Spring Lake.

At area strip mines, crappie are hitting fairly well if you go deep using minnows.

Catfish are fair to good; bass and bluegill rate fair.

Clinton Lake continues to offer big yields of catfish using shad, night crawlers and stinkbait.

Largemouth bass are also hitting strong on spinnerbait, crankbait, plastic worms and jig and pig.

Reports of a few crappie being caught on jigs and minnows.

Overall it’s slow at Spring Lake.

In Galvin’s weekly tournament on Tuesday,

Donnie Schimmelpfenning and Cody Watson did team to land a 5.43-pounder to win big bass honors.

At Evergreen Lake, crappie are still being caught with many limits being reached.

Bluegill and bass are doing well.

Look for catfish at night.

Saugeye have been slow.

At Dawson Lake, crappie and catfish rate as the best bets.

Crappie are hitting on jigs and wax worms and catfish on stinkbait and worms.

Bass and walleye rate fair.

Tip of the week

From larrysfishinghole.com: Try catfishing near channels, stumps, brushpiles, log drifts, undercut banks, dense timber and any place of shelter any time of day.

Shad would be a good bait choice during summer because it is natural to the catfish’s environment.
