Central Illinois fishing report (4-14)

April 14, 2011 at 12:34 PM

What’s biting

Warmer weather has helped fishing improve, but an expected cold front and rain could slow things this weekend. Channel cats biting well in many areas. Crappie and bass have been active on some lakes. White bass picking up.

Honey holes

Bass fishing has been decent at Banner Marsh, with most using spinner baits and jigs. A few small crappie also biting there on minnows and waxworms.
Good-size bass being picked up at local strip mines on spinner baits and jigs. Presley’s reports an eight-pound, eight-ounce bass harvested from a private strip mine. Crappie have also been decent, about five to six feet deep.
Crappie are biting on the Illinois River. Catfish are taking dipbait and shrimp. A good number of bass are biting on spinner baits and jigs. White bass were also real good this week around the Mackinaw River.
Crappie were active at Lake Bloomington, hitting on small tubes cast along the shore near brush. Fish were 2-6 feet deep, with a few a little deeper.
Plenty of hybrid stripers biting on minnow lures below the spillway at Clinton Lake. On the lake, crappie, white bass, catfish all going good. Catfish taking dip baits, shad and shrimp. Crappie biting shallow on tube jigs and curly tails.
Channel cats are red hot at Bernadotte on the Spoon River, with more than 100 per day recently being caught on stinkbaits.
Some nice size, good quality bass biting off the shore on spinner baits at Spring Lake. Some nice crappie also being caught.
White bass still hitting at Powerton on Panther Martins and Gay Blades. Catfish also doing well there on Asian carp, shiners and creek chubs.

Wall hangers

Matt Murphy of Bloomington caught a 67-pound blue catfish earlier this month using Asian carp for bait.

Tip of the week

From larrysfishinghole.com: “With the growing awareness and concern about lead in the environment, the tackle industry will begin to start using more steel, tin, bismuth or plastic in sinkers. We probably should all consider using non-lead tackle in our fishing.”
