The Associated Press

UTICA, Ill. (AP) - An 8-year-old boy suffered head and neck injuries after falling into a canyon at Starved Rock State Park.

The News-Tribune in LaSalle ( http://bit.ly/oo7TgJ ) reports that the unidentified boy fell Sunday afternoon into Basswood Canyon. Illinois Conservation Police Sgt. Hank Frazier says the boy was hiking with his parents when he fell about 20 feet. Authorities say they boy was in stable condition.

Frazier says Ottawa River Rescue took the boy across the Illinois River to Utica fire and ambulance workers. The boy was then airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Starved Rock State Park is about 60 miles northeast of Peoria in central Illinois.
