Bowfishing championship at Henry

July 14, 2009 at 03:21 PM

The Bowfishing Association of Illinois will hold its annual Illinois State Championship on Saturday and Sunday in Henry.  This tournament is sponsored by Innerloc Bowfishing and is open to anyone who wants to attempt to shoot Asian Carp and other invasive species with bow and arrow.

This is the fourth year that the Championship will be held in Henry.  Upwards 0f 30 boats are expected to compete for the largest number of invasive fish shot with bow and arrow from 8 PM Saturday night to approximately noon Sunday.  There will be a pool for the largest fish and a cash prize from Innerloc for the largest fish taken with an Innerloc point.  Registration will take place on the riverfront in Henry from 6 PM until 8 PM with several door prize drawings beginning at 6:30.  Registration is $30 per person, with up to three people in each boat.  Weigh-in will begin at approximately 8 AM Sunday and will go until noon, or until all boats have been counted and their largest fish weighed.

In previous years in Henry, as many as 483 fish have been caught in a 16 hour period by one three-man boat!  Hunting at night with lights in the backwaters around Henry has been quite an adventure for teams from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, and other states.  Asian Carp, Buffalo, Grass Carp, and even Gar are plentiful in the backwater and shallows.  Nearly all fish are shot in the water, rather than attempting to shoot them as they jump.
