Bowfisher shoots huge bighead carp

May 06, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Have you heard any of the stories about monster fish as big as a man swimming in the Mississippi River?

Maybe it’s time to start believing those tales again.

On Sunday, Illinois Bowfishers member Darin Opel (who stands 6-foot-4 and lists his weight at 300 pounds) shot the above-pictured 92.5-pound bighead carp on the Mississippi River by the Melvin Price Lock and Dam No. 26. The huge Asian carp was reportedly weighed on certified scales.

The fish was 62 inches long and had a 30-inch girth and is believed to be the largest carp taken by an angler. The previous biggest fish for an Illinois Bowfishers Club member was 35 pounds. Asian carp guru Duane Chapman (a researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey) has reportedly found only one bighead larger—a 93-pounder from North Texas that was not taken by an angler and was not weighed on a certified scale. Chapman said there is also a bighead that weighed more than 100 pounds in a Pakistan museum.

We hope to have more details soon. Until then, check out Illinois Bowfishers.comhttp://www.illinoisbowfishers.com/.
