Charlie “Poorboy” Patrick caught and released this 23-inch Lake Michigan smallmouth in late May.

Big Fish Fridays: Near-record

June 04, 2010 at 06:46 AM

Mark Samp’s Illinois smallmouth record appears to have survived another season. But not by much.

Fishing on May 21, Charlie “Poorboy” Patrick caught and released a Lake Michigan smallmouth that weighed 6.3 pounds on his new Bass Pro spring scale. The fish was 23 inches long and hit on a Carolina rigged, Lucky Strike goby-imitator.

Patrick opted not to have his fish weighed on a certified scale, telling Dale Bowman of the Chicago Sun-Times, “I thought about it. [Two companions] wanted to go to Henry’s and get it weighed. But I wanted to let it go.”

Barring any unexpected challenges in the next few weeks, it appears Patrick’s fish has come the closest this spring to Samp’s record 6-pound, 7-ounce smally caught in a Fulton County strip-mine lake on March 26, 1985 (pictured below)

very nice smallie! sounds like only a matter of time till a new record is established.  Getting out on the lakefront for smallies is on my list of things to do, what a fishery!
