Big Baldwin Lake flathead

Belleville News-Democrat outdoor writer Rod Kloeckner has a story about a 54.86-pound flathead catfish caught out of Baldwin Lake on Aug. 7, 2007. Adam Duncan of Hecker caught the big flathead on 75-pound test line while fishing shad.

“When I set the hook, it pretty much felt like I was pulling in a Volkswagen,” Duncan, 26, told the News-Democrat.

Earlier this summer, Waterloo’s Scott Schifferdecker caught a 53-pound flathead while jug fishing on the Kaskaskia River south of New Athens.

Duncan told Kloeckner he believes there’s a flathead swimming in Baldwin Lake that will top the state record 78-pounder caught by Jody Harris of Carlyle on Aug. 11, 1995 out of Carlyle Lake.

“I think so,” Duncan said. “I think we were close to the record last year. We had one that weighed at least 65 pounds and a little while later, we caught one that was a little heavier. We didn’t get them weighed on an official scale and I’m kicking myself for not doing so. That’s what I’m shooting for is the record. I wouldn’t go out in this heat unless I was trying to get that record. I just want to be in the record books.”

A power-plant lake, Baldwin spans 2,018 acres and has already produced the state record for channel catfish. Then again, that 45.5-pound channel cat is widely believed to have been misidentified and is thought to have actually been a blue catfish.

It would have been nice to have took a picture weighed it and let it go to get bigger. If you dont practice catch and realese then your chances for a state record are slim to none
