Backyard bird? Bald eagle seen in City of Lincoln

December 04, 2012 at 08:29 AM

Gatehouse News Service

LINCOLN — Here’s a bird most backyard bird-watchers don’t have on their yard list.

Colleen, Jim and Shannon Cabit of Lincoln submitted this photo of a bald eagle spotted in Lincoln late last week on Bryan Avenue.

“My husband was putting out Christmas decorations and saw the eagle flying west above our home,” Colleen Cabit said.

“Then he heard a bunch of crows squawking and he looked up in the tree across the street from our house. The bald eagle was sitting on a high branch in the tree! The crows were circling it and squawking. It sat there quite awhile and then flew west toward downtown Lincoln.”

I have seen 2 already. First one was in a bottoms south of my house in northern Marion County. Second was north of Farina in southern Fayette County. I usually see a handfull a year. I think its really cool that they are around southern illinois. Gives us something to look at since deer population is going down.

I’m a resident of Lincoln and have seen 2 different eagles nests. Our local population is crazy. I’ve seen them on several different creeks and on opposite sides of our county. This isnt the first backyard eagle we’ve seen.
