Applications for the 22nd Annual Deer Hunt for People with Disabilities at Lake Shelbyville are due April 8.

The special hunt, hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Wolf Creek State Park, are available online at
http://www.mvs.usace.army.mil/Shelbyville/wildlife.htm.

Applicants must possess a state-issued disabled person identification card or a disabled veteran identification card.

Applications must be submitted to the Lake Shelbyville Project Office, RR 4, Box 128B, Shelbyville, IL 62565.

On April 11, 25 applicants will be selected by drawing to participate in the hunt during the first Illinois firearm season.

Past hunt participants have enjoyed morning and afternoon hunts from ground blinds and elevated stands, catered meals for the three-day event, free lodging, and an average harvest success rate of 75 percent over the last five years.

Last year’s hunt was one of the most successful with the 25 participants harvesting 26 deer!.

Participants have traveled from as far as California to participate in the hunt.

Without the help of volunteers this event would not be possible.

Last year, volunteers performed nearly 400 hours of service to help make the hunt a successful experience for individuals that might not get this type of hunting opportunity anywhere else.

Some of the tasks carried out by volunteers included getting hunters to and from their blinds, carrying the hunter’s gear, handling harvested deer, and setting up meals.
