Angler lands likely record bighead carp

May 08, 2010 at 07:24 AM

Illinois’ first record fish of 2010 appears likely to be a bighead carp.

Fishing for white bass last Tuesday on the west side of the spillway below Carlyle Lake in the Kaskaskia River, Jack Bailey of Salem caught a 69-pound bighead carp according to Rod Kloeckner of the Belleville News Democrat.

The 51-inch fish was weighed on a certified scale at Carlyle Meat Market and verified by Illinois Department of Natural Resources biologist Randy Sauer. Brian Short of O’Fallon caught the previous state record of 64 pounds in 2008 out of Horseshoe Lake in Madison County.

“It’s awesome,” Bailey told Kloeckner. “I never dreamed it was going to be a state record. I knew it was big, but I had no idea what the state record was. I just knew it was big. This just floors me. I didn’t know there was something like this floating around out there. It’s almost scary to think there’s something as big as that in the water.”

That is the one record I would not care to have.

Well, at least no one is telling em to throw it back. It would make a pretty wall mount ;>{ At least the kid can brag a little and say that him and his Dad caught a state record fish together. That is memory that can never be taken away: Congrats Guys
