Ameren to sell land including prime hunting areas

April 30, 2012 at 08:13 AM

Peoria Journal-Star

BANNER - Local sportsmen may gnash their fangs - um, teeth - as they discover some of Fulton County’s prime hunting and fishing land is up for sale.

“It’s got world class duck and goose hunting on it,” said Jason Wallingford, owner of United Country-Wallingford Group in Quincy, which will handle the deal.

Nearly 1,500 acres north of Duck Creek Power Station is included in the June 13 auction. According to Wallingford, more than 250 acres is covered by water, with the largest single lake at 70 acres. Assembled more than 40 years ago by Central Illinois Light Co., the property is now owned by Ameren Energy Resources Generating, and will be offered in 11 parcels.

“The tracts range in size from 23 acres up to 400 acres, which is farm pasture land that is mostly reclaimed strip mine land,” said Brian Bretsch, spokesman for Ameren. “But there’s also some virgin land within the mix.”

Long managed by Blue Lakes Fishing Club, the property offered a haven for migrating birds - and exceptional hunting for nearby landowners.

“It could be the chance of a lifetime,” said Wallingford. “It hasn’t been offered to the public. It was all put together in 1975.”

And it could all stay together under one owner, unlikely as that may be. Although interest from a Chicago consortium has been rumored, Wallingford said no one has come forward yet. Each parcel will be sold to the highest bidder; the land has been split by use, from tillable acres and pasture to woods and crappie-stocked lakes.

“It’s been un-utilized land we’ve owned for quite some time, the company’s making available to potential owners for use as they see fit - perhaps as farmland or recreational land use,” Bretsch said.

While Bretsch did not elaborate when asked why the land was being sold now, there has been a booming market for potential farmland in the last couple of years.

“Some of it is at an all-time high,” said Wallingford.
