“A wonderful beginning” to dove season

September 04, 2012 at 10:57 AM

The State Journal-Register

Describing the start of dove-hunting season last weekend, Mike Wickens said the words every hunter wants to hear.

“We’re off to a wonderful beginning.”

Wickens is site superintendent of the Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area near Chandlerville.

Jim Edgar Panther Creek is always among the top public dove-hunting sites in the state each year.

Over a three-day period, from Sept. 1 – 3, hunters killed 3,860 doves.

“Dove hunting has been phenomenal,” he said.

Dove numbers:

Sept. 1:  One hundred thirty-three hunters killed 1,348 doves for an average of 9.8 doves per hunter.
“And that was in the rain,” Wickens said.

Sept 2: One hundred and forty hunters shot 1,610 doves for an average of 11.6 per hunter.

Sept. 3: One hundred fifty three hunters killed 902 doves for an average of 5.9 per hunter.

“We filled up days two and three,” Wickens said.

A cold front is forecast to move through Sept. 6.
“That always has an impact,” he said. “(Until then) we’ll have great dove hunting for the next few days.”

Site report:

Doves aren’t the only attraction at Jim Edgar Panther Creek.

“Fishing has been good too, and I’ve had a good fishing report from the weekend,” he said.

Four to six inches of rain allowed the burn ban to be lifted, too.

“People can have campfires for the first time since early July,” he said. “On the negative side, we had to close the horse trails (due to mud).

“Camping also was way down because of the rain.”
