Greg B. Nejmanowski caught and released this bluegill June 20 on a Mepps No. 2 spinner while fishing on Lake Rinaker in Carlinville. He estimated the fish weighed 1.5 pounds and said for sure the bluegill was, “The biggest and most colorful I have ever caught!”

The U.S. Department of Interior announced in August that it had approved the Hackmatack — the Algonquin word for the tamarack tree — eight years after local residents, conservationists and environmental groups began a campaign to preserve it from encroaching development.
