Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Turtle time

These are dangerous days for turtles in Illinois. It’s egg-laying season for many turtles and for some that means crossing roads, like the snapping turtle pictured above on a rural Peoria County blacktop.

All turtles nest on land in Illinois and most lay eggs from mid-May to early July. Snappers like this one may lay 20 to 40 eggs. In Illinois, turtle eggs generally require about two months to hatch. Hatchlings of some species, like painted turtles, stay in the nest over winter.

Illinois’ rank among states in sales of aluminum boats in 2009.

Boat sales down

Powerboat sales are down 12 percent in the first quarter of 2010 according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. That’s better than last year’s 35 percent decline in the same quarter, a fact that’s credited to better sales of 18-foot aluminum boats.

That doesn’t mean people have stopped boating. Actually, the NMMA estimates boaters increased time on the water by 4 percent last year. And sales of used boats increased by 7.7 percent in 2009.

Kudos corner
