Pondering a goose hunt

December 15, 2007 at 02:20 PM

I found the geese this morning. Big flocks of them, feeding in a field I have permission to hunt. But now I have to decide, and quickly, whether the birds will return to feed again tonight. Or whether I’d be wiser to wait until Sunday morning to go lay in the field. The birds have been flying over my house for days and they’ve got me all wound up. But basically, it’s a one-or-the-other option for me. So it’s either tonight or Sunday morning.

What would you do?

Just in case, I’m going to get my white sheet, BBs and long underwear ready.

6:00 P.M. UPDATE
Well, by the time I got out there (3:15 p.m.), the geese were already in the field. Hundreds of them. So I tried to sneak into a logical flight path behind some scrub trees. Well, when the geese finally left, they went right over the creek I had hoped to hide in—too wide of my poor spot. But I hope things will be different in the morning. I’m going to show up early in the AM and if they come our to feed I’ll be there first.

Warming up after a long day of sledding. The kids are getting old enough to do most of the work on their own, which is nice. And they don’t whine much anymore about getting snowy. Now if we could just find some really steep hills, we’d be all set. Incidentally, both boys nailed trees today without a peep. That’s another plus.
