Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

May 17: Picture of the Day

May 17, 2010 at 06:40 PM

Farmers across central Illinois are not real thrilled with these recent rains, given that they’re seeing a fair amount of ponding in fields and some corn will have to be replanted. Plus, the moisture is slowing bean planting, though we’re still well ahead of the five-year average for that.

But not everybody minded the flooded fields. These turkey vultures along Route 8 actually seemed to favor the wet spots. While a few of the ugly rascals sat on the railroad tracks (their usual perch), most of vultures were in the fields along the edges of small pools.

Did shad wash up from Kickapoo Creek? Or do the vultures just like getting their feet wet and muddy? I have no idea. But I do know they are ugly birds and the fact they share a name with turkeys is a slap in the face of turkeys everywhere.
