May 13: Picture of the Day

May 13, 2010 at 04:57 PM

Well, at least two gobblers in Peoria County survived this turkey season.

Illinois turkey season ended at 1 p.m. today and I spotted this gobbler and another gobbler showing off to a hen in a field near home. I drive past the same field whenever I go to Peoria and there are often turkeys feeding in the back corner, well away from the road. Three times I have seen birds up close in this field: twice after turkey season had recently ended and once after I had been hunting 35 minutes away near Dunlap. In all three cases I had to shake my head and smile.

This year was even more bittersweet. Despite a fair amount of time in the timber I’ve got no bird. By the ultimate standard, my turkey season was a failure. I hunted eight days and did not shoot a gobbler.

Last year I needed until the last day of the season to shoot a bird. And my plan was to do the same thing today, since I have a fifth-season tag. But I rolled over twice after waking in the dark and hearing rain and then woke too late to get out.

But I can live with that. I’ve shot some turkeys in my life. I’ve become a better (though still terrible) hunter. I learned some things. And I look forward to next turkey season. I guess the only thing I might do different is to try to get permission to hunt the field pictured above.
