June 20: Picture of the Day

Summer patterns for bass. What does that phrase really mean? And what does it mean “early and late” are prime times to catch bass.

Well, today the early part meant we had the canoe on the water shortly after 5 a.m., right as a storm passed to the north. Good thing, too. By 6 a.m. the bite had slowed markedly. Gordon Inskeep and I caught more bass in that first hour than we did in the final three.

Best of all, for me anyway, the frog bite was strong early. I love to just throw a frog on top of weeds and have fish come up in a splash to engulf the lure. Exciting to watch. Then it’s exciting trying to get the bass through all the weeds.

The lake we fished this morning in Peoria County is small, weedy and picturesque. And it’s home to some nice bass. Inskeep had the best today, a pair of almost-18-inchers, and we combined for about 30 fish. Or more. It was too early to count. Just time to enjoy a Father’s Day of fishing.

Most fish came on frogs, though I caught several on a Senko and a few on a Jackall flick worm rigged wacky style.

Inskeep caught his best fish on a Spro frog, including the one pictured above.

On the way home, I saw one of Elmwood’s famous foxes stretched out in someone’s blacktop driveway at about 9 a.m. Guess these foxes are really getting comfortable.
