Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Another cougar not from Illinois

February 09, 2008 at 08:35 AM

This just in, here’s another picture of a cougar on a deck that is NOT FROM ILLINOIS no matter what some liar sends you in your e-mail basket in the years to come. Again, this cat is NOT FROM ILLINOIS.

This picture is of a big cat spotted ona deck of someone living in Durango, Colo. Click here to read the entire story in the Durango Herald.

Wrote Shane Benajamin in the Feb. 8, 2008 paper:

“A mountain lion, perhaps searching for an easy meal during this harsh winter, was seen Thursday morning skulking around two homes west of downtown Durango.

Bruce Binkley, who lives on County Road 206 west of the Durango Tech Center, said the oversized cat rattled his front door before walking away. He snapped several pictures of the lion lurking on the other side of the glass door.

‘I don’t know what he was doing,’ Binkley said. ‘I don’t know if he was trying to get in the house or if he saw his reflection in the window, or what.

‘It was pretty thrilling to me. I was pretty impressed. I was pretty busy snapping pictures. No harm done.’

Better than that was the following quote from Joe Lewandowski, whose words make him out to be your typical Division of Wildlife spokesman.

“If you do see a mountain lion in your yard, you should be cautious,” he said.

Really. Great idea Joe. Never would have thought of that myself.
