Wisconsin man pleads guilty to running down deer with snowmobile

WAUPACA, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin man accused of running down and killing deer with a snowmobile has pleaded no contest.

WLUK-TV reports that Nicholas Hermes of Waupaca entered the plea Tuesday to three felony counts of animal mistreatment and three misdemeanor hunting violations. Prosecutors say Hermes and two other men were involved in the January 2009 incident along a trail in the Town of Lind.

A no-contest plea isn’t an admission of guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors likely have enough evidence for a conviction. Hermes will be sentenced Feb. 7 in Waupaca County Court.

Co-defendant Robby Kuenzi of Weyauwega is scheduled for an April trial.

His brother, Rory Kuenzi, was sentenced last month to 11 years in prison for the deer killing incident. He’s already in prison for a fatal drunken driving accident.
