Third rabid bat in Lake County
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — A bat has tested positive for rabies in Lake County, the third in the county so far this year.
A Fox Lake couple found the bat in their bedroom on May 26. Health officials have advised the couple to get rabies shots.
Rabies affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. People can contract the disease from the bite of a rabid animal. Rabies can be fatal if left untreated.
Lake County health officials urge residents to avoid contact with bats. They also encourage pet owners to have their dogs and cats vaccinated for rabies.
