ND study shows low antelope numbers

FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says the hunting season for the animal commonly known as antelope should be canceled this year.
A study by department biologists shows that the statewide population of pronghorn is down 37 percent from last year and 50 percent from 2008. Biologists say the drop is due to back-to-back severe winters.
The number of pronghorn in the state is estimated to be about 6,500. The population topped 15,000 twice in the last eight years.
The Game and Fish recommendation must be approved by Gov. John Hoeven.
