More cougar sightings in southwest Illinois

August 01, 2008 at 09:52 AM

Rod Kloeckner of the Belleville News-Democrat reports that people continue to report cougar sightings in the Belleville area.

The latest reports center around a large black cat in Alton and several more sightings in the Kaskaskia River valley bottoms north of Okawville.

Writes Kloeckner:

Since February, when a story about (Russell) Shubert and his wife possibly spotting a cougar near their home on Riverbluff Road appeared in the News-Democrat, he has been keeping a log of big-cat sightings in his area.

It’s up to 20, with Larry Bening and Jim Stein being his latest entries. Earlier this month, both reported seeing two small cougar cubs in farm fields.

Bening was near Plumb Creek, about three miles northeast of Okawville, checking his fields early in the morning when the cubs ran across the road about 100 yards in front of his truck.

Prints from the alleged black cat near Alton were determined to be those of a dog by biologists.

You have to realize that there are people out there that cannot tell a deer from a cow.  This is true but nevertheless there are very observant individuals that are credible and would not make this type of mistake.  I saw an adult black Jaguar approx 250 lbs walk out of tall standing grass near Hillview IL a few years ago.  I was approx 30 yards away with my headlamps illuminating the animal.  I couldnt believe my own eyes for the first time in my life.  It is reality.  They are in this particular area, they are living in the bluffs and making their dens in areas where man does not normally tread which is the caves and higher parts of the bluffs.  They are feeding on the local deer pop and they are not attacking wildlife.  Why is this, simple they don’t run and the deer are plentiful.

It should have read “they are not attacking livestock”.
