Michigan takes step toward moose hunt
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan might be inching closer to allowing a moose hunt in the state.
The state Senate unanimously approved a bill Wednesday that would direct the Michigan Natural Resources Commission to set up an advisory council for a moose hunt and an annual hunting season. The legislation now heads to the House.
There could be a limited moose hunt within two years of the measure becoming law if the advisory council recommends a hunt. Effects on the moose population would have to be considered before an expanded hunt could be approved.
Moose were relocated to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula from Canada in the 1980s because of dwindling population.
Michigan now has about 500 to 600 moose. The population is estimated to be growing by about 10 percent each year.
