CHAMPAIGN (AP) — Preliminary data show Illinois recorded its 4th wettest year on record in 2009.
State Climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois State Water Survey says statewide average precipitation in 2009 was 50.3 inches — 11 inches above normal. Angel says that’s the 4th wettest year for Illinois since 1895.
According to the water survey, the wettest year on record in Illinois was in 1993, when there was 51.2 inches of precipitation. Next was 2008, when there was 50.5 inches. Angel says Illinois has seen “two back-to-back exceptionally wet years.”
The normal statewide annual precipitation is 39.2 inches.
