Illinois historic sites open until Nov. 30
SPRINGFIELD (AP)—Illinois state historic sites scheduled to close because of budget cuts will stay open six weeks longer than anticipated.
The Historic Preservation Agency said Friday that 13 historic sites will close November 30th, the same day as eleven state parks.
That agency, like the Department of Natural Resources, which administers parks, needs more time to follow proper procedures in laying off 73 workers at the two departments.
Governor Rod Blagojevich cut $1.4 billion in July from a state budget lawmakers sent him that was not balanced. The administration is laying off 325 employees in all.
Historic sites originally were going to close October 1st, with parks following on November 1st.
