Hummingbird festival coming to Lincoln’s New Salem Aug. 4

PETERSBURG, IL. The Illinois Audubon Hummingbird Festival at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site will be held from 9 a.m. to Noon Aug. 4. 

The festival will provide an opportunity to see hummingbirds up close during capture and banding.

The festival is a family event, and admission is free.

Visitors may stay as long as they wish.

Mary Hedrick of the Sangamon Audubon chapter will be capturing and banding the birds.

The purpose of banding is to determine how far into Mexico or Central America the birds go for the winter, where they stop during their travels, how long they live, and whether they come back to the same sites year after year.

Some birds banded in Illinois have already been found in Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Texas.

The Illinois Audubon Society, sponsor of the Festival, in partnership with its Sangamon River Chapter, will have a wealth of information available relating to the hummingbird’s life history.

Participants may also “adopt” a bird by making a $5 donation to the Illinois Audubon Society’s land acquisition fund.
