Giant City SP open for weekend
MAKANDA, IL – Giant City State Park in Makanda is welcoming visitors for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend and the rest of the spring and summer season in the aftermath of severe weather than caused extensive damage throughout the region on May 8.
While Giant City State Park has remained open and electricity service has been restored to facilities within the park, Giant City staff reports there are still areas within the park that are closed to the public because cleanup continues following the widespread storm damage.
Areas within Giant City that remain closed indefinitely are Shelter #1, Fern Rocks Nature Preserve, Trillium Trail, Stone Fort Trail, all picnic areas along the Stone Fort Road, the 12 Mile Red Cedar Hiking Trail, the 12 Mile Equestrian Trail, and the Equestrian Campground.
Visitors need to avoid areas within the park that are closed due to continuing storm-damage hazards. Citations will be issued for noncompliance with the closures of those areas.
