Durbin, Biggert host briefing on Asian carp
CHICAGO (AP) - Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert are hosting a bipartisan briefing on Asian carp.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley are scheduled to appear at Tuesday’s event at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium.
Federal and state agencies will give details on the current carp situation and what could be done next. Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources are expected.
Asian carp is an invasive species notorious for starving out other fish. They can grow up to 4 feet long and 100 pounds.
Several states in the region have filed a lawsuit with the U.S. Supreme Court to close locks south of Chicago as a way to keep the carp out of the Great Lakes.
