Dale Bowman of the Chicago Sun-Times said he expects the Illinois state smallmouth record to fall within the next week. That’s the most notable statement in his latest fishing report.

As to the larger question, is Bowman right, only time will tell. No question the potential is there in Lake Michigan for fish larger than Mark Samp’s 6-pound, 7-ounce record out of a Fulton County strip-mine lake.
