Chicago mayor presses for statewide handgun registration

February 09, 2012 at 08:59 PM

The Associated Press

CHICAGO—Mayor Rahm Emanuel proposed statewide legislation Thursday to require handgun owners to register their weapons, calling it a common sense measure that would protect the rights of responsible gun owners while keeping illegal firearms off the streets.

The city of Chicago requires all handgun owners to register their guns with police, but the state of Illinois does not. A statewide registry would help the Chicago Police Department follow the chain of possession for guns found at Chicago crime scenes that originate in other parts of Illinois, the mayor’s office said. It is also aimed at reducing the transfer of illegal firearms.

Emanuel said just over half of what he called “short time-to-crime guns” recovered at Chicago crime scenes come from parts of Illinois outside the city.

“A state law requiring handgun owners to register their guns - just like they register their cars - will increase the safety of our residents,” Emanuel sa id.

The bill has the backing of Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, who said it would help keep residents safe and ensure responsible gun ownership throughout the state.

The legislation is intended to prevent the illegal transfer of guns by requiring owners to contact police if their gun is lost or stolen. Sellers would have to report all handgun sales and transfers, and buyers would have proof they are not paying for a stolen gun.

“It will create accountability for gun owners and firearms dealers to ensure that they act in a responsible manner in order to keep guns from falling into the hands of criminals,” McCarthy said.

The bill is undergoing a final review and will be filed in the coming weeks.

And this brilliant idea is coming from an administration that can’t decide what vehicle sticker should be put on a car…..And this bonehead McCarthy couldn’t run a newspaper stand let alone a police department.

What about all the guns that come from out of state how’s that going to stop them.

Most of the population of Wisconsin lives closer to Chitown than my Illinois home….........So why do they think registering my guns will help them????

Here’s an suggestion to all the public servants, instead of seeing who can get the most laws past have a contest to see who can get the most repealed.

Chicagoans just don’t get it…but their elected leaders do.  Emanuel knows exactly what he’s doing, taking steps to eliminate all gun ownership in Illinois.  He convinces the sheep in Chicago that it will reduce crime overall knowing full well only the law-abiding will abide by the law.  Criminals who want guns will always have guns just like dirtbags who smoke crack will always have crack.  It’s a case of supply and demand, nothing more.

I still consider myself an “Illinois Guy” even though I’ve lived in Ark. for 6 years.  But with headlines like this, combined with everything else that is so screwed up in the state, it’s not hard to see why I left. I feel bad for my parents and everyone else I know, who has too many ties to pack up and go somewhere better.
