Bob Bahr shot this 11-point buck on Oct. 31 in Fulton County near Avon. Writes Bahr: “About 7:15 a.m. this buck angled across in front of my stand in Fulton county near Avon. He was hot on the trail of a doe with his head to the ground and I was able to stop him at 30 yards. The arrow entered the right side of the chest and exited behind the left shoulder”
Bucks, archery totals falling
Rainy weather last week appears to have depressed the archery harvest some.
Through Nov. 1, bowhunters have taken 27,676 deer. That’s off the pace of 2005 (29,330) and 2006 (27,949) but is ahead of last year’s 24,737 and the 24,168 in 2007.
Daily harvest rates from last Monday through Friday were only 473 deer per day, down significantly from the average weekday harvest of 791 deer per day during the same period in the previous four years.
Harvest sex ratios continued to shift, with buck harvest exceeding doe harvest for the first time. Sex ratios last week were 52.3 percent bucks to 47.7 percent does. Overall, bowhunters have taken 63.2 percent does.
The top five counties so far are:
- 1. Pike 1,440
- 2. Fulton 753
- 3. Jefferson 677
- 4. Peoria 637
- 5. LaSalle 596
Here’s the overall county-by-county harvest to date.

Comments ::
Kinda makes sense doesn’t it? The pre-rut started last week. More bucks moving. More bucks harvested. They will “harvest” a lot more bucks for the next few weeks during the rut…then the doe slaughter, err make that “harvest” begins again. Welcome to the politically correct Illinois deer management program. Boy, Pike County better get with it or they are not going to be close to their usual 6,000 deer taken with archery equipment. What’s going on up there, Mr. Shelton? Not enough outfitters harvesting deer I’ll bet! I think we would all like to see the sex ratio figures for a heavily outfitted County like Pike, Brown, or Adams.
Come on Big D. You know Shelton is going to blame it on “all the corn still out in the fields”.
gilly, i got on here just to see if the corn excuse was in one of the posts
I see you did too
