Not really a big buck story, but he’s my biggest, and probably the best story I will ever have.
It was Dec 4, raining and cold. I wasn’t really expecting to see anything that morning. But I went anyway.
I was watching some does out around 400 yards for about an hour. Just hoping they would come my way or give me a chance to sneak up to them. Then I seen a deer whose coat was still brown as the summer coat. I grabbed my binoculars and looked; it was a buck, couldn’t really see the rack, but I knew I was going to get him because I had missed him during the first season because of scope malfunction.
I grabbed my grunt call and grunted. He looked at me like I just slapped his mother in the face. He started charging right for me, I grunted a few more times to make sure he didn’t lose interest. About 140 yards, I shot, I hit him but I didn’t think I did because he stopped again at 160 and looked like he wondered what had happened. So I shot again, another hit in the chest. He ran about 40 yards and laid down in a field.
After a few seconds he realized what had happened and freaked out, and took off running again for about 30 yards and finally dropped. It was amazing, I don’t think that will ever happen again. He is only a 5 point buck, maybe 2 1/2, but he has an amazing story and will be mounted like the trophy he is.
