What is this? Can you make the identification?

I have to admit, this one stumped me.
If you open a field guide, you will find trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses at their peak.
Trees will be fully leafed out. WIldflowers will be in full bloom. Nowhere can you find a picture of a plant as a seedling, in bud or after a frost.
You will know you have arrived when you can identify plants and trees in the dead of winter.
Another admission: I had to ask for help. I couldn’t figure it out and I couldn’t begin to Google image search it.
I had to ask my friend Vern LaGesse, executive director of the Friends of the Sangamon Valley.
He very politely, as always, answered my question.
Give it a try yourself. I’ll post the answer in the comments section after a time.
