Illinois Outdoors

Welcome to Chris’ Camera Bag, a place where I will discuss ways to enjoy nature and the outdoors with your camera and share some of my work and experiences. My name is Chris Young, and I am the Outdoors Editor for The State Journal-Register in Springfield. I started my career as a newspaper photographer, adding the title of reporter and editor only in the last five years. Before I became Outdoors Editor, I was developing a niche at the newspaper as a nature photographer. Readers seemed to like the occasional break from hard news, and frankly it was good for me to get out and look for the peaceful side of life as well.

The photo above was taken at the Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area near Chandlerville. It is a fall sunrise with the exposure reading taken from the sky. A flash was used to balance the brightness between foreground and background. Otherwise, the plant would be in silhouette. This usually takes some experimentation to get it right.

I will try to keep the discussion current, but will probably delve into the files at first to find examples of tips and topics I wish to cover. I value your feedback as well. I can be reached at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). I hope you enjoy the pictures and the stories behind them. Thanks for giving me a forum to share my work. Hopefully, together, we can all improve our pictures.
