Coots get no respect
April 24, 2013 at 10:24 PM

It’s true.
The American coot is an abundant, duck-like bird that is pretty much overlooked equally by hunters and bird-watchers
But look close and you often will find coots associate with ducks and other water birds.
They also need space to get a running start to takeoff.
Watching them “walk on water” is a sight to behold.

Blue-wing teal mingle with American coots at the Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge.

Coots are off to a running start.

Coots ride the waves during a windy day on Lake Chautauqua.
