EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of Astoria bowhunter Weston Poppenhager is the story of his hunt for a 15-point Fulton County buck.

I have been out hunting only 4-5 times this year without much action. I took a half-day vacation on Friday to head up to Fulton County and get an evening hunt in at the farm where my parents live and where I grew up.

I had seen a nice buck last year in this general area, but it was always too dark or too much brush in the way to get a good look at him.

I took my climber to this area and got up in a tree around 3:45 p.m. Without cutting shooting lanes, and having very minimal clearings, I wasn’t too confident about getting a shot off if I had to.

About 4:15 this bruiser came through by himself. Fortunately, he got into one of my only clearings and I whistled to get him to stop.

He turned his head the OPPOSITE direction and I let one fly. It was about a 25-yard shot. The shot buried in his spine and dropped him instantly.

While he was kicking around, trying to get up, I put my other two arrows in him just for good measure. I had it green scored the next evening by a friend down the road: 15 points, 183 inches gross.

Several people have estimated him to be 5-7 years old.

It was the experience of a lifetime!
