November 11, 2008

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 10

Kill Date: Nov. 11, 2008

County: McDonough

Season: Bow

Bad weather didn’t slow Bryan Dooley of Colchester. Nor did a trespasser on his McDonough County hunting property.

Despite chilly rain on Nov. 11, 2008, Dooley went to his stand anyway that evening. That proved to be a good idea. But not immediately. First, Dooley had to watch a trespasser.

“I just got everything all set up for the hunt when I noticed movement across for the small soybean field. After studying it I saw it was another hunter trespassing on our ground who was trying to sneak out unnoticed,” Dooley said. “Next thing I saw was the other hunter slowly walking my direction (this time on his side of the fence) under the cover of the property’s fence line. Then, I couldn’t believe it. He crawled up a tree just 35 yards from me.”

Dooley had enough. So me left his stand and moved to the south side of the field.

“I didn’t sit there long when a spike buck walked by four different times then a few does went by soon after,” Dooley said. “Twenty minutes later a small 8-pointer came though next. So the deer were running very good.”

Just before dark, Dooley heard noise coming from behind him on the edge of the field. So he grabbed his bow, gave a mouth grunt and dropped the buck, who ran just 30 yards.

After that, the trespasser and the rain were all but forgotten.
