Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 25

Kill Date: 11/19/2010

County: lawrence

Season: Shotgun

I hunted in my stand from 5:45 am till about 9:30. I saw several does, and a nice buck was chasing a doe along a hillside in the distance, never coming in close enough for a shot.

After getting to my truck and heading for breakfast, I saw a nice buck chasing a doe. I said to myself, the bucks are still moving, so I headed back out. I started using my Grunt call about every half hour for two hours. Finally at 1:00, I grunted one time and about 20 seconds later I heard what sounded like another hunter coming through the woods. I looked up and it was the biggest deer I had ever seen in my 25 years of hunting.

He was running full blast and and grunting like crazy. He turned to his left about 30 yards away, still running, so I threw my gun and bleated with my mouth to try and get him to stop. He didn’t so I bleated again even louder. He stopped behind some brush. All I could see was his top half, so I shot and hit him in the spine and he fell right over.

After calling my son who was hunting on the other side of the property to come and help me, I sat in my stand to gather myself for a few minutes so I wouldn’t fall trying to get down. I cautiously walked over still shaking, and there he was: the biggest thing I had ever seen outside of a deer hunting show. I had to celebrate by myself for about 10 minutes until my son and my buddy showed up to celebrate with me. And help me get the beast out of the woods of course.

Truly the hunt of a lifetime. He weighed 260 lbs field dressed, so you could imagine the time we had. All in all one of the best days of my life.
