Kill Date: Nov. 20, 2004

Steve Wallis wasn’t planning on shooting a big buck while in the field in 2004.

At least he wasn’t when he got out of his tree stand to field dress a doe.

Yet that’s exactly where he was when the buck of a lifetime eventually walked into range. First came a doe, whose body language told Wallis another deer might be near at hand. That deer turned out to be a buck. With that in his mind, Wallis removed the rubber gloves he had been wearing to field dress the doe.

But he missed his shot at a 6-pointer. Disgusted, he sat down.

That’s when the big buck arrived.

“He walked to within 40 yards, I set everything down, picked up the gun and went to town,” said Wallis, who was hunting out of his brother’s tree stand. “I’ve been hunting long enough to know that if you get out of the stand to do anything, you keep the gun next to you.”

And while his first two shots missed, Wallis made good on his third shot. Even so, the wound was a bit farther back than Wallis would have liked and the buck managed to take off on a run over a ravine.

After hearing the shots, his father Dan Wallis arrived to see what had happened. Father and son then tracked the buck. When they finally encountered the deer bedded down, the elder Wallis at first mistook the tangled rack for a bush.

The buck Wallis shot near Henry scored 255 6/8 inches.

That he shot the deer with a Winchester pump shotgun that had belonged to his father only made the story sweeter for Wallis.
