Steve DeWitt’s 28-pointer

October 07, 2006

Illinois hunting and fishing

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 28

Kill Date: Oct,. 7, 2006

County: Adams

Season: Bow

Not all the big bucks shot in Illinois these days wind up with residents.

In fact, more and more trophy racks head out of the state every year thanks to the Prairie State’s growing reputation as the whitetail destination.

One of those trophies headed to Zeeland, Mich. back in October of 2006 after Steve DeWitt shot a 226 7/8-inch beast in Adams County. Steve (left) poses withIllinois hunting and fishing the 28-pointer in the picture above along with his brother-in-law Ryan Berghorst.

The two had purchased their own hunting ground in 2005 and made the purchase pay off handsomely one year later. DeWitt had seen the buck during a summer scouting trip to Illinois earlier in the year, so he was aware the monster was there when archery season arrived. DeWitt returned to Illinois on Oct. 6 and was able to shoot the big buck on his first day of hunting on Oct. 7.

DeWitt made a good shot from 40 yards, a shot he said he had practiced in the offseason. Practice paid off in the form of a buck with a typical 10-point frame that grossed 180 inches and had almost 56 more inches in abnormal growth. That made his deer tops among non-typical bow kills for the 2006 season.

“Thankfully, everything happened so fast that I never really had a chance to see how much bone was actually on top of his head,” Steve told writer Troy Spooner. “I think otherwise I would have been shaking too much to get a shot off!”
