County: Fulton

Season: Bow

EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of Shay Medus of Canton, 20, is the story of his hunt for a big buck he shot on the second day of bow season in Fulton County.

“First off to my knowledge this buck has never been seen by my father or I until August of this year. My dad was the first to witness the buck feeding out in our field in early August. From August till September I spent many hours watching from the road and patterning this buck.

“He worked just like most early season deer feeding in the same field every night, same time, etc. In the middle of August we started to get some good trail camera pictures of this deer and then we realized just how big he was. Scouting went well up until about three weeks ago when he started to disappear. We didn’t get too worried, just figured he went nocturnal like most bucks this time of year.

“Anyway, opening day came around and my dad and I hunted along with Bob Ackerman. Opening day offered no sign of the big buck. Friday morning came around and this was the first sighting of the buck since early September. So Friday night I went to an old wood stand that Ive honestly barely ever hunted in the six years we have owned this farm. I was hunting a section of bean field where this drop tine spent most of his time throughout the summer.

“To my surprise at 5:30 p.m. this stud stepped out and offered me with a 23-yard shot. I made a clean double lung kill, and the buck went down within seconds. So after all those evenings of scouting the fields, checking the cameras it finally paid off early season.

“As far as the buck goes, he’s a main-frame 8 with the 8-inch drop, dressed out at 218 pounds and will gross in the 160s. I would like to give a special thanks to my father Craig Medus, and good friend Bob Ackerman.
