Scott Juenger’s 20-pointer

November 11, 2009

Illinois hunting and fishing

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 20

Kill Date: Nov. 11, 2009

County: Washington

Season: Bow

EDITOR’S NOTE: Here in the words of bowhunter Scott Juenger of Oakdale is the story of his hunt for a 20-point Washington County buck.

I was starting to get discouraged because I wasn’t seeing anything but knew the deer were there because I had so many trail-cam pictures.

Most of my big buck activity was around 3 or 4 a.m. I had pictures of this deer a few weeks prior to the hunt—I knew he was big but not that big!

Anyway, on Nov. 11, 2009 I was sitting there playing Texas Hold ‘Em on my phone when I heard a lot of racket behind me. At first I thought it was squirrels but then I decided to look because it got louder.

When I peeked around the tree I couldn’t believe it. There he was coming straight for me and tearing up the brush and trees as he came. I picked up my bow and got the shot at 10 yards. It was a brushy shot and he just stood there—I thought I had just missed the biggest deer of my life and then he took off running!

He went a little ways and stopped and I thought oh great I get another chance. Just as I was going to pull back with another arrow he took off running again. He ran into the field and stopped. I was so disappointed and then all of a sudden he dropped!

He has at least 20 scorable points and an unofficial green score of 210. He is an awesome buck!

I killed him at about 3 p.m.
