Ryan Venhaus’s 29-pointer

November 16, 2007

Trophy Tidbits

Scorable Points: 29

Kill Date: Nov. 16, 2007

County: St. Clair

Season: Shotgun

Just when he was on the verge of quitting, Ryan Venhaus made his 2007 deer hunting season.

After missing an 8-point buck in the morning of the opening day of firearm season, Ryan Venhaus, 27, of Trenton shot a 29-point St. Clair County monster that same evening. But the non-typical buck almost got past Venhaus, who told Rod Kloeckner of the Belleville News-Democrat that he had ejected the shells from his shotgun and was ready to climb out of his stand when he saw something in the corner of his eye.

Turns out, what he saw was a doe, who left a few seconds later. Then, in her place, came a big buck.

“I was like, ‘Holy cow! It’s the biggest deer I have ever shot,’” Venhaus told the News-Democrat. “It’s probably the biggest deer I’ll ever shoot in my whole life. I was pretty excited and my brothers were pretty excited. My brother has a couple of wall-mounters and so does my uncle. This one is probably double the size of any one that I have ever shot.”

Venhaus quickly put in a shell and shot the buck once. A few minutes later, after hearing the buck try to get up, he shot again.

The buck was scored by a Buckmasters official and measured out at 236 7/8 inches net. Note, that is not the Boone and Crockett club score.

“The taxidermist couldn’t believe it,” Venhaus said. “He said this will be the biggest one that you will ever shoot. You’ll never get a bigger one than this. I was like, ‘You’re probably right.’”

Ironically, had Venhaus been more accurate earlier that same morning he would not have been able to shoot the 30-pointer. Instead, his shot at an 8-pointer wound up missing.
