Scorable Points: 14

Kill Date: Oct. 5, 2009

County: Woodford

Season: Bow

Bowhunter Nick Bondi of Eureka headed to the woods of Woodford County on Oct. 5, hoping to see deer.

Since it was early in the season, he didn’t anticipate seeing a big buck. After all, this is the time of year when mature bucks are supposed to be secretive, almost nocturnal in their approach to life.

So after spending nearly 10 minutes listening to a deer eating acorns behind him, he assumed the deer was a doe.

“I was unable to turn around for fear the deer would see me,” he said.

Imagine his surprise when the deer that stepped out shortly after 6 p.m. was not a doe, but rather a mature 14-pointer.

“I was actually real surprised to see a deer this nice this early in the season,” said Bondi, who made the most of his 15-yard shot. “I really figured it would be a doe that stepped out.”

The buck is Bondi’s biggest in 18 years of bowhunting. “My prior biggest was a little 7-pointer,” he said. “He stepped out in front of me at
15-18 yards. I shot the buck climbed down, tagged him and my hunting partner drove his truck right to him. After 18 years, everything was perfect. From the way it happened to it being the largest deer I have taken with a bow, shotgun, or muzzleloader, I guess it was just my turn.”

Bondi shot his buck in his fifth hunt of the year—after seeing only five deer total in those hunts. “And I had no idea this one was out there,” he said.
